I have heard that you should always barter for a lower price when you are buying something. They expect this and will charge you more if you don't. I am not real good at bartering so I am not to sure how I would go about doing this. Is this expected everywhere in Africa or just when getting certain things like cab rides or something?

I can bater pretty well. But after a while it kind of gets old, I hope that you wouldn't have to barter with every single thing.

I am with you that I will leave the majority of any bartering up to my husband. I don't think it is something you have to do but if you don't barter they will charge you a higher price. My understanding is they are expecting you to barter and if you don't they are fine with that.

I have been browsing flea markets since I was a small child, but I still have a problem bartering. I really need to work on it, because I hear it's a good skill to have when you are traveling through Africa.

My problem is I am afraid of saying a price that is way to low and having them look at me like I am crazy.

I am like you tater I would be afraid that I would offer something way to low. And it would insult them. I would feel like a real fool.

I really would want to be careful about bartering. I'm sure that if you asked for a price that was way too low, it would be an insult to the seller, and they might be offended.

See that's what I was saying. I would hate to offend someone. I have heard that the biggest thing you should really barter on though is the fare for taking a taxi cab somewhere.

See, for items I can barter pretty easily. But for things like services (rides, guides, etc) I am truly lost I haven't a clue what the going rate would be. Does anyone know?

I have no clue on what you should offer? I would think that there would be somewhere on the internet that might have some clue as to the going rate or what would be a good offer.

I will have to try to do some research online. But I guess you could always shop around and compare prices on things that way you will be able to give them a good estimate when it comes time to actually buy the item.
