For a relatively small island, measuring just 58km by 35km, Lanzarote is surprisingly big on tourist attractions, offering visitors lots of alternatives to a day at the beach.
The island boasts a great deal of raw, natural beauty, thanks largely to the enormous series of eruptions that rocked Lanzarote during the 1730's. These lasted for six years, wiping out villages and submerging some of the best farmland beneath a carpet of lava.Virtually all of the most popular attractions in Lanzarote were developed by island born artist César Manrique, who played a major role in the controlled evolution of tourism on the island.
