Has anyone been to both of these cities?  If so, which would you say is better for a
tourist who hasn't stayed in the area before?  That would include better attractions
and lodging as well as dining.

I'd say definitely Cape Town! You could never go wrong with Cape Town!

This is indisputably South Africa's the most beautiful city and has a diverse range of attractions, sights and activities to offer. Its just magical, yet so real you would not believe you are in a city.

Jo'burg, compared to Cape Town is not all that... and Im not saying that Jo'burg isn't a good destination but Cape town beats it hands down.

I would all so say Capetown.A friend of mine went there and they said it was beautiful. They have been quite a few place in Africa, and they like it the best. I hope this helps.

Great then!  And considering this is the same answer that everyone gave so far, it seems like
the place to visit without any question.  Thank you.   Smiley

When I hear about Johannesburg, I always envision that as a place with a lot of fighting or famine. Did this ever happen long ago?

The violence you're probably thinking of was pre-apartheid.  Things have gotten
much better since they're past that.  Just be alert like we have to be anywhere
we travel in today's "new world."

Which one is more crowded population wise? Does anyone happen to know? Yes I have heard that Johannesburg is better to visit now than it was a few years back. At least that is what I am seeing from looking around for information on my trip when we go.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Katharina. It probably was quite a long time ago.

I have heard that things have changed a lot there. No matter where you travel these days you have to be cautious. It is sad but that is just the way it is these days.

I never realized that Cape Town was indeed so beautiful. I googled some pictures of the area and it is very nice.

I also agree with Lynn, It is the most beautiful city in South Africa  Grin Grin Grin. If you have chances, why dont you visit both and then compare them yourself?  Tongue Tongue
