Bus route, train or plane? Which is the best way to travel in Tanzania? Obviously the plane is going to be the fastest but what is the cheapest and safest?

Ferries or boats to some of the islands is a good way to see the area. Roads can be bad, especially in rainy season, so taxis and buses can be slow going at best. I'd think that flights even within the country are probably best. Then again, some of the best views and sights would come from using a private vehicle.

I would have to say it would just depend on where you are going and how long it is to get their. I would rather take a car but I do know that I wouldn't want to spend hours on end in a car getting somewhere if I didn't have to. Only because I would only have so much time.

I think if I could travel by boat that is what I would do. I know I wouldn't want to drive. I think the boat idea would be great.

Are there plenty of boats that go out or do you have a waiting time for a boat?

I really don't know how many boats they have. Bur i am sure if you ask a travel agent they will be able to help you.

I wonder if you can rent boats that you yourself can drive or if you have to have a guide drive them?

I think that you would have a guide with you to drive them. I am not sure but I would want a guide. You never know what could go wrong.

I agree... I'd not go anywhere in another country like this without a guide who thoroughly knows the terrain and the things to beware of.

Would a guide charge you hourly to go to these places or one set fee? Would it be a packaged deal with the hotel?

I wasn't so sure I'd choose boat travel in Africa *until* I read that they do safaris by boat at some places. Now THAT sounded like something I'd really enjoy!

I think that a guide usually has a set fee, not an hourly fee. I'm sure that they tell you what you should expect beforehand. They might have packages, I'm not sure. As far as the hotel offering a guide as a package, I'm not sure if they do that either. Everybody that I know has had to find their own guide. I'm sure they have some that are highly recommended though.

Does anyone know how hard it is to find a guide? Also, I didn't know about a boat safari, that sounds wicked cool.

I'm sure if you are looking for an experienced guide then it will cost you. I would look for a safari package that included the boat ride you are talking about if i were you. That would i think cost you less that just hiring a guide. At least that is what i think. Anybody have a different opinion?
