Yes, from what I have seen on here and other boards there are some great safaria's. I really want to do on where you ride the elephant to go on the safari. I am not sure though if that is in Tanzaniz? I will have to see where I found that information.

Riding an elephant sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I am older and am not sure how long I would be able too ride. But I would give it a try.

I've been to Kenya and am going to Tanzania next year. My experience in Kenya was amazing and I couldn't wait to plan my next trip to Africa. The main reason I'm posting is to discourage anyone from doing an elephant safari, or riding an elephant in any other country like India or Thailand.
People don't realize how abusive it is to the animal. Elephants are not made to have a cumbersome wooden platforms strapped on to their backs with hundreds of pounds of weight added on. Over the years, it breaks down their spine and causes extreme harm. If you're going to ride an elephant, you should sit straddling it's back just behind the head. Suffice it to say that probably just about any endeavor that involves an animal being exploited for tourism is not a good situation for the animal. If you want an experience with exotic wildlife in the country you're visiting I would suggest seeking out an animal orphanage or rescue facility. The money you spend goes towards a good cause and you can usually have a much more rewarding experience like the time I was in Thailand and gave an elephant a bath in the river! Awesome!

wow petsitter that was some very useful information. I'm not criticizing you or anything but in just wondering because there are some people who would say that if you say so then people shouldn't be riding on horses either because says who that horses where made for humans to ride?
Just wondering. Although after reading your post i would think twice before riding an elephant.

I'm not claiming to be an expert on elephant physiology but just passing on information I learned while at an elephant rescue facility in Thailand. If you look at a horse, they have a bit of a dip in their back; almost like a natural saddle. If you look at an elephants back, it is rounded and you can even see it's spine. That's why they have to put those huge wooden benches on top of their back because there is nowhere to sit but behind the head. Plus the more people they can put on one elephant the more money they make.
Anyone out there who is an animal lover; I would recommend before traveling anywhere that offers tourist experiences involving an animal of any kind, to do a little homework before you go and try to find alternatives that do not harm the animals and will give a much more rewarding experience. For instance my being able to help feed and bathe a whole group of elephants, including babies, while in Thailand.

i've heard that elephants have very good memories. I read a story where poachers killed an elephant and years later the animals wnt on a revenge mission destroying property. I dunno how true that was
